Microsoft Commerce Server Support @ 1-855-785-2511

We support for Commerce Server Manager, an application for getting control of multiple stores. Besides tweaking store properties, you can also archive and restore all components easily. The Web-based Business Desk console is used to administer a given site in Commerce Server 2002, including reporting, product, catalogue, shopping cart, and user management, as well as promotional campaigns. We used this tool to import 5,000 products for our site, a model online bookstore. (CSV and XML file formats are supported). We also used the Catalog Definition Design and Catalog Editor tools to create several product lines for different types of books. By default, there are half a dozen built-in product types. There is no separate customer import tool, but the new .NET version will integrate with Passport, and any site can use Windows integration with just a little developer customization.

A major improvement in this release is the ability to create up to 10,000 virtual catalogues targeting specific products to different customers. We created a virtual catalogue that mixed two base catalogues of Books and CDs to build a separate view of the same product information. Support for multiple languages also means excellent control of stores that reach international markets.

Rules-based sales promotions and marketing campaigns are also enhanced now, with the ability to select different users (by market or spending patterns), then automate directed ads, e-mails, and discount promotions. Support for multiple tax rates, shipping options, and currencies enhances Business Desk further. Another area that gets a boost is reporting, which uses QLAP Analysis Services for SQL Server 2000 to provide 100+ business analytic reports for spotting sales trends and the like. The Commerce Pipeline Editor allows further customization of business rules, though we suspect that it still requires developer expertise to add a script to the steps in a business transaction.

We used Visual Basic .NET to customize our store both in its visual style and business logic. (Visual InterDev no longer exists as a separate tool for Web design in the new Visual Studio .NET suite.) Commerce Server 2002 certainly will require some developer involvement, but the range of tools and options here, plus good manager-focused tools like Business Desk and the Pipeline Editor, ensure that once your site is up and running, programmer expertise will not be needed for daily maintenance.
